Safe, clean drinking water.
If you find yourself in a situation (specifically a zombie apocalypse) where the drinking water is questionable, you have several options when it comes to making your water safe and clean. There are water filtration systems, purification tablets, UV lights and the old stand-by... boiling it. All of these options work and all have there place. So here's a quick primer on making water safe to drink.

Practical things to know.....
So the unthinkable has happened. You have awoken to a new world. The apocalypse has actually happened! You’re prepared though, right? How could you not be? You’ve seen all the movies and you never miss an episode of walking dead. In fact you’re even up to issue #77 in the comic. Truth of the matter is, you’re not a sword welding blind man with the will of God backing you like in Book of Eli. Nor are you a genetically altered super being like in Resident Evil. You’re not even a certified gun instructor named Shane who’s trying to bed your “dead” best friend’s wife! Truth of the matter is you’re in the worst shape of your life. You’re 20 lbs over weight and can’t do a single push up. The only thing you ever shot were Nazi’s in Call of Duty. So what do you do? You start by throwing out 90% of what you think you know from movies and try to think practically. First thing you need to throw out is the idea that most of these movies and or shows seem to take place in the warm months when staying warm isn’t an issue. Reality is, the apocalypse could happen any time.
Practical thing to know #1 HOW TO START A FIRE
Transportation Post #1
Viable modes of transportation are going to be a necessity in End Town, just as they are now. Whether you are on foot, bicycle, automobile, motorcycle....boat even, it's going to need to be stable, quick, and be able to carry your gear. As a motorcyclist I've often wondered if a motorcycle would be a good Doomsday mobile (My street bike certainly would not be). My mind was made up for me when I visited a local dealership and was introduced to the Ural series of side-car toting motorcycles. These things are down right mean with how utilitarian they are. Practicality is their middle name.

Creator...Destroyer, you decide.
I love multi tools. They may not be excellent at one thing, but they are damn good at MULTIPLE things. So when you are limited to what you can carry do you grab 4 or 5 tools/weapons...or one that does the same jobs damn near close as well? Again, this is all subject to personal opinion...but check out this bad boy, the Stanley Fubar.

Let Them Eat... Rations
Dan posted a great blog last week about the Survival Seed Vault. This is a favorite item of mine and an absolute must for your zombie apocalypse "hope chest". But growing produce takes time and you're going to need food to see you through to harvest. What do you do for "now" food? Well here's a list of options to keep in mind.
First Aid or not to Aid...
Blood...we all have seen it; from a tiny paper cut to unfortunate catastrophic events its hard to miss. So, if there comes a time where you are hurt, you NEED to do something about it. Infection is no joke when hospitals are smoking ruins and doctors are extremely difficult to find (hint hint - make sure you have one in your group).
Some type of First Aid Kit is required and to be honest, I'd rather have more than I need than not enough. In steps Adventure Medical Kits for Sportsman, designed for all types of field scenarios including gunshots, stab wounds, arrow wounds, and splinter removal (hey, they hurt too).

Revolution...
Yeah...two posts in one night...oh well, deal with it. Just watched the preview for this Falls new NBC show Revolution. Finally a contender on normal TV (I'm cheap and don't have cable). Watch the trailer at the jump. I dig the concept...
No Ammo Req'd...
Knives...we use them all the time to cut, dice, and chop. But...not at something moving at you to EAT YOUR FACE!!! Check out this series from the legendary Ka-Bar. Bad A$$ are two words that come to mind...The Zombie Killer Series .

Solar Powered... err... Power
Xantrex XPower Powerpack Solar 400 |
Last August, Hurricane Irene hit New Jersey and caused quite a bit of damage. While I do realize that this was a tiny event compared to say a Katrina or Hurricane Andrew, this was still a big storm for New Jersey standards. About 9pm on Saturday night (August 27th), before the real heavy winds kicked up we lost our power. Boom! That quick we found ourselves in the dark… really dark. There were no street lights, no moonlight, nothing but complete darkness. Of course we had flashlights and candles ready, but we weren't prepared for three days of it… or were we? (of course we were.)

Seeds for One Acre...
As some of your surviving party are fending off the undead, others are needed to plan for the future of your group. If you decide to stay on the move then this next product doesn't really help you out unless you plan to act as Nomads and change locations per season. On the other hand if you find a camp to start Town (Enter Name Here) then check this out. The Survival Seed Vault is here to save the day when it comes to starting your healthy, well balanced diets.

Welcome to our new blog!
Photo of a real-life zombie! FACT! |
It seems lately that no matter where you look, someone is talking about the end of days in one fashion or another. Either it's the Mayan Calendar, global financial collapse or my personal favorite… zombie apocalypse! No matter how you choose to take it, it's coming. At no time in my life has the writing on the wall been so clear. Now, if you're anything like me or my friends, you want to be prepared to survive whatever is coming. This is what our new blog is about… being prepared to survive a zombie apocalypse, but in a practical sense. Sensible advice, product reviews and the occasional update about that AMC series with the zombies… that's what we're about. So in the coming weeks, months and hopefully years ahead (don't forget about the Mayan Calendar thing on Dec 21th), my friends and I will blog about products and ideas that we think will make the impending doom a little easier to tolerate.
Practical Death Dealer...
As you start to follow this blog you'll realize, we are practical guys. If (more when actually) the End of our time starts with Zombies or other hard to kill nasties we want a firearm that is just like us. Ease of use is key, I want it to fire EVERY time whether its dirty or clean. Loading and unloading should be a breeze and finding various types of ammo should be next to simple.
I've thought long and hard about this rain maker and I can only come up with one gun that sums that up...a 12 GA pump-action shotgun; Remington, Mossberg, Winchester...the brand isn't a huge deal, but what counts is its ability to fire accurately from 3 yards to 100 yards with various types of shells to accomplish this.
