Zombie Movie Review - Dawn of the Dead

It's been a while since I posted a movie review and as this is a follow-up to my first one... this movie is a follow-up to Night of the Living Dead.  While it is not technically the sequel, it is another George A. Romero masterpiece.  This is the 1978 classic that I'm referring to, not the 2004 remake directed by Zack Snyder.  We'll get to that one later.

So... what did we learn?

LOCATION - Once again, Romero stays close to home... Pennsylvania.  The opening scenes take place in a newsroom in Philadelphia.  Once the main characters take off in the helicopter, their location is never mentioned.  However, the mall that they hold up in is the Monroeville Mall in Monroeville, PA.  With that said, it seems that Pennsylvania IS NOT the place to be during a zombie outbreak.  I need to move!

ZOMBIE CHARACTERISTICS - These zombies are quite similar to the kind we meet in Night of the Living Dead.  They are somewhat slow-moving but sometimes are seen "running" after their prey.  They also seem to have some ability to climb stairs and ladders.  At the end of the movie we find our helicopter pilot turned zombie, Roger, able to remember where the crew is hiding on the mall.  It is also mentioned that they have memories of their past lives, which is why they gravitate to the mall in the first place.

HOW TO KILL THEM - Same as always... head trama.  Good thing there was a sporting goods store in that mall... with lots of high-powered rifles and ammo.  Ahh, the good old days... malls and guns!

SURVIVAL TIPS -
1) Find a mall.  There's plenty of resources and apparently there's a secret room in every mall that house's lots of Civil Defense supplies.
2) Don't piss off that motorcycle gang.  They're only going to ruin everything if you try to be greedy.  There's plenty to go around.  Share with other humans.

3) Make sure the pregnant girl can fly the helicopter too.  Give her (and everyone for that matter) lessons.  It'll save your butt in the end.

THE OUTBREAK, CAN IT HAPPEN? - At no point in the movie do the mention what caused the outbreak.  It starts off mid-panic and it is what it is... fleshing eating zombies that re-animate after being bitten and killed by other zombies.  There's no reason to believe that this can happen based off of this movie.  However, the Monroeville mall is REAL!! Hmmmm
